Power Down | Jöttnar Fjorm by Ape

In the early tales of Norse legend, Thor, the god of din and
lightning, used his mythical hammer known as Mjölnir to protect the fortress of
Asgard from attacks by mountain giants and other dangerous beasts. The Mjölnir
symbol was also the source for Jöttnar's logo and slogan: "Conquering
giants." Norwegian-born British outerwear brand, Jöttnar is the brainchild
of Tommy and Steve, two former Royal Marines commandos. In the icy, stormy
mountain ranges of Norway, deep within the Arctic Circle and the site of many
of the couple's training sessions with the Marines, inspiration came.

The goal was to create technical outerwear that not only
protected against the brutal elements of the mountain range, but also reflected
the beauty of the Scandinavian landscape that inspired them. In 2013, Jöttnar
was born. Just as Thor used Mjölnir as a defense against his mythical enemies,
Jöttnar's goal is to offer protection against the modern adventurer's opponent,
in the form of elements.

Combining aspects of technical outerwear with modern style
has been a rapidly growing trend in recent years - a glance at the latest
releases from The North Face, Patagonia or Arc'teryx is proof enough. But while
these collections often seem to detriment some of their more technical elements
in favor of streetwear components in line with current trends, it seems obvious
that Jöttnar sticks to what they do best: extremely functional outerwear, with
a look clean and timeless.

The way the company does business is also an extension of
this philosophy. Disciplined designs combine with care and craftsmanship to
produce limited volumes of clothing in highly focused ranges, allowing them to
focus on the smallest details while creating an atmosphere of exclusivity.
However, the price is more accessible than other elite outerwear brands like
Moncler or Canada Goose, which creates some interesting and perhaps much-needed
commonalities.

The jacket
“Okay,” you probably think, “but what do the clothes really
look like? Well the Fjorm (£ 395) is Jöttnar's heartfelt goose down jacket,
filled with 275g of 850 fill goose down. Fill power, a measure used to indicate
the quality of the down, it generally ranges from 300 for the lowest quality to
900 for the best quality.

The water-repellent jacket is treated with DownTek, a
water-repellent technology designed to keep down 10 times more dry than without
treatment. The down is also sourced ethically according to the Responsible Down
standard and does not contain harmful PFCs.

The jacket itself is packed with features. Some of the best
include a huge internal mesh pocket that can hold your hat, gloves, map, water
bottle, and just about anything you can carry, and an included sleeping bag to
store your jacket. Compact lightweight storage for travel. Elastic cuffs have
been incorporated into the design to form a waterproof seal against the
elements, with an internal fleece lining to insulate the cuffs and keep your
hands warm.
For climbers, snag-proof hem cords have been included to
prevent the jacket from tangling with ropes and gear, while the zippers will
work even if frozen, and the loops on the large zippers allow for use with
gloves or cold hands.

Overall, Jöttnar is an ambitious brand and he does not
hesitate to evoke the spirit of a Norse god in the broad lines of his
philosophy. But they deserve the trust they represent. After all, creating an
effective combination of classic style and technical outerwear is not an easy
task. Despite this, Jöttnar has created a way to look good while conquering the
most brutal conditions Mother Nature has to offer, and any behemoths he may
encounter along the way.
